Fall Project Inspiration: Crafting a Cozy Quilted Table Runner

As the leaves begin to change and the days grow shorter, fall is the perfect time to dive into a cozy, seasonal project. One of my favorite ways to embrace the warmth and colors of autumn is by crafting a quilted table runner. It’s a simple yet impactful way to dress up your dining or coffee table, adding a touch of handmade charm to your home. Plus, it’s a great project for both seasoned quilters and beginners!

Why a Table Runner? Unlike larger quilting projects, a table runner is quick, practical, and easy to customize. You can play with seasonal fabrics, textures, and designs to complement your fall decor without investing too much time or material. What’s even better is that a quilted table runner can be swapped out for each season, making it a versatile home accessory.

This year, I’m incorporating burgundy, a color that I’ve been loving this fall (from my boots to my Yeti cup, burgundy has become a staple!). The deep richness of burgundy pairs beautifully with other fall tones like gold, rust, and cream, creating a runner that looks not only festive but also timeless.

This fun project starts with my FREE Half Square Triangle Star Block pattern!

Step by Step. Let’s get started!

  1. Gather Your Materials

To make the pattern in the colors I chose, you will need the following Fabrics. Fableism Nocturne: Everyday chambray  1/4 yd Garnet (star points)  3/4 yd Quarts ( background) 1/3 yd (binding) Dobby Stitch Woven from my stash in a moss green.

2. Cutting & Piecing the Fabric
Once you’ve chosen your fabrics, cut the amounts listed below. This is enough to make a 3-block table runner that measures 54” X 16”.  ( You can always add an extra block and adjust your background fabrics to accommodate a more extended table)

3.Sewing it All Together

Start following my free block pattern to make the number of star blocks you desire. Trim blocks to 12”, then sew them together alternating with 5”X 12” rectangles. Then sew RST the 3” X 12” rectangle on each end of the runner. Finally sew the 2.5 X 54” strips on each long side of the runner. Once all pieces are sewn together, press the entire runner to ensure it lays flat.

4.. Adding Backing & Binding

To complete your table runner, add a fabric backing and binding to give it a professional finish. For the backing, you can choose a solid color or subtle pattern that complements the front design. Burgundy is an excellent option here! Sandwich the backing and batting with the quilted top, then sew the layers together, finishing with binding around the edges for a clean, polished look.

Quick Tips for Success:

  • Play with Texture: Use a mix of solid fabrics and textured prints to create depth in your runner. Don’t be afraid to combine various patterns—stripes, florals, and plaids work beautifully together in fall palettes.

  • Size It to Fit: Measure your table to ensure the runner is the correct length and width. That is the fun of this project: you can customize it to fit your space perfectly.

  • Keep It Washable: Since the runner will be on your dining table, choose easy-to-clean and care for fabrics.

Wrap Up Your Fall Crafting

A quilted table runner is perfect for welcoming the season into your home. Not only does it add a personal touch to your dining space, but it’s also a fun, creative way to play with fall colors and patterns. Whether you’re quilting for yourself or making it as a gift, the project is sure to bring warmth and beauty to your home.
